MyPath is the Nova Scotia Government portal for university students to get funding and loans to their education. The applications system was outdated, and it was long due for an overhaul. I supported Student Assistance offices to redesign their online portal focusing on a mobile interface to create a better experience for students going through this process.
The project was broken down into two phases. The first one consisted of user research, building a rough mock-up of the screens, and recreating the information architecture. I wanted to understand the main issues with the current system and what parts students struggled with. We've heard from students that the main problems were: understanding how much and when they should expect to receive money each semester, which steps they had to go through on an application, and how much money they owed to the provincial and federal government.
The second phase was focused on creating a higher fidelity prototype to test our ideas with users. I conducted remote user testing of the app and did quick fixes in between the tests to see if we could try new ideas before the project was over. On the pictures below there is a side-by-side view of the low-fidelity prototype (phones on the left) and the final prototype (phones on the right).
This is where students could make new applications and check the status of their current ones. Students have to start a new application each semester, and they have to submit documents throughout the semester
